Systems imposed by force, violence and genocide are unlawful, unstable and unsustainable, giving birth to cultures steeped in harm.

On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2023, a question to consider, imagine, visualize and feel into actualization:

What is our Climate Future?

For our latest issue, Adriene Jenik of @ecotarot has crafted a powerful piece with her gorgeous ECOtarot deck, looking at the archetypal energies at play in the Mojave high desert from a climate future perspective.

The ECOtarot deck, Adriene’s custom spreads, and performance catalyze speculative exchanges around climate disruption. These exchanges make room for both rational + irrational thoughts and feelings of a wide range of people struggling to make sense of how to live in our world. Strong, often contradictory emotions arise, including ecological grief and the optimism underlying an acceptance of natural cycles of death and rebirth.

Adriene, who has has given over 1300 readings around the world, including at the UN Climate Change Conference, is an artist, educator and end-of-life doula living in the California high desert.

Her computer and media art spans 3 decades, including pioneering work in interactive cinema and live telematic performance.

Adriene is Professor of Intermedia at the School of Art, Arizona State University, and has recently started the PhD program on Sustainability there. She's also affiliate faculty in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and Desert Humanities Center, and a sustainability scientist in the Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation.

Adriene is Creative Producer of the Artists' Grief Deck, a set of 60 medium format ‘flashcards’, individually designed by artists, sometimes in collaboration with grief workers. One side displays an original artwork, created by artists from around the world responding to an open call, and on the reverse is a ‘grieving prompt.’ These are memorial and processual actions that give the individual something to do – a gesture, a tiny performance, a movement, an act of mindfulness – in memoriam for someone or something whose loss they are grieving. As a toolkit, the decks have been disbursed for free to grief workers and community organizations.

Behold this glory…

“From the Folds of the Womb” by the deeply talented @zarakandart.

We’re lucky enough to have had Zara paint the cover of issue 6, the powerful and evocative woman in red, a depiction of wilderness under threat, and inspired by Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ “La Loba”.

When we first saw the pictured “From the Folds of the Womb”, we knew we had to share our idea for this issue with Zara and see if she’d be up for painting the cover.

A London-born artist, Zara has been living in Joshua Tree since 2015. She has exhibited at numerous venues within the US and has been featured in many online and print publications across the globe. Zara is an active member of the high desert community and loves to contribute culturally in whichever way she can, be it through teaching local painting classes, curating art shows, or providing culinary deliciousness through her private chef company, @epicureanfling_joshuatree (yes, really as yummy as it looks 🤤)

Currently, Zara’s art related projects include oil painting, oil painted animation, writing for various art platforms such as ArtNowLA and Hi-Fructose Magazine, and monthly curation at Art Queen Gallery in downtown Joshua Tree. She has also written a beautiful essay for this issue of Luna Arcana on the Art Queen complex.

Zara is the editor of @the_gallerist_speaks, an international interview series focusing on gallery directors, arts organizers and curators. Supporting the arts, even in small ways, is a strong passion of Zara's, as she believes that civilization would be a hollow, monochrome unit without it.
